Lebanese environmental Party denounced the cutting of 142 trees in kobyeit
iloubnan.info - September 13, 2008, 13h01

BEIRUT - Lebanese Environmental Party (LEP) denounced on september 10 the cutting of 142 trees of pine in Kobyeit and the pressure on the environmentalists demanding for an investigation to be initiated.

The obliteration of the trees is in the purpose of widening the road. However, it has damaged a whole forest of pine trees, the LEP said. The party declared their support to the president of the environmental association in Kobyeit and a founder member in the Lebanese Environmental Party Doctor Antoine Daher, who organized a project to stop the eradication of the trees in order to widen a road for the trucks transmitting pebbles from illegal quarries that causes ecological crisis and also claiming that opening a road will help school buses to pass in the morning. However, it is known that the cars are currently taking this road even if they have to slow down their speed.

The party also expressed its sadness due to the municipality's not cooperating with them. Also the environmentalists rejected the interference of the security forces and the taking off the boards which expressed their objection of the matter at 3 am in the morning.

Finally they called for a full investigation on the matter to discover who cut those pine trees.
